The Bear Witness Project was created through a partnership between Kristi Rangel, a Houston-based multi-disciplinary artist and education advocate and the African American History Research Center, Houston Public Library. This oral history project is a component of the Witness Series which explores the experiences Communities of Color have to the Land and Waters of Southeast Texas.

The collection of interviews document African Americans and their connection to the land in Southeast, Texas touching on areas of Black ancestry and migration in Texas, Louisiana, and the United States.
